New Franklin holds on to beat Brunswick, 4-3
The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs softball team evened its season record to 5-5 by beating Brunswick/Northwestern Monday night in Brunswick 4-3.
New Franklin softball coach Ross Dowell said this was a great softball game between two evenly matched teams. “Both pitchers pitched well,” Dowell said. “We got some nice hits and made a few plays on defense. I’m proud of our effort in fighting through some adversity. This was a good win over a quality team.”
The Lady Bulldogs never trailed in the game against Brunswick after scoring three runs in the first and one again in the fifth to go up 4-0. However, in the bottom of the sixth, Brunswick rallied back with three runs to cut the lead to one.
Brynn Belstle picked up the win in the circle for New Franklin, while Haston took the loss for Brunswick. In seven innings, Belstle struck out 12 batters and gave up three runs on three hits and one walk. Haston allowed four runs on five hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
New Franklin also out-hit Brunswick 5-3, with Belstle going 2-for-4 with a single, double and one RBI. Abby Maupin finished the game with one triple and two RBIs, while Carly Dorson and Kelsi Fair added one single each. Sophia Held also drove in one run.
For Brunswick, Zeilstra went 1-for-3 with one double and two RBIs.
