Franklin man charged with murder in stabbing death
A Franklin man was arrested Tuesday morning by the Missouri State Highway Patrol on charges of second-degree murder in the Labor Day death of Courtney Clardy at a Franklin residence.
Emmett S. Wood Jr., 44, was being held without bond Wednesday in the Howard County Jail in Fayette.
Wood was wanted for a death that took place about 5 p.m. Monday, the Fayette Advertiser reported. Wood's father, Emmett Wood Sr., called 911 to report a woman he did not know was bleeding at his residence, the newspaper reported, citing court documents. Wood Sr. told officers he saw his son fighting in the residence, and at some point, Clardy hit her head on the fireplace.
Officers arrived to find Clardy, 22, dead of multiple stab wounds, the newspaper reported.
A gofundme page has been set up by Sara Clardy for donations to defray the funeral costs for Clardy.
"Anyone who knew Courtney knows how big her heart was," the page states. "In the toughest situations she still always found a way to smile, and treat others with love & kindness even when they least deserved it."
Howard County Sheriff Mike Neal called for support in the investigation from the Mid-Missouri Major Case Squad.
Neal could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.
The court documents cited by the Advertiser were not available through CaseNet on Wednesday morning. Howard County Prosecuting Attorney Deborah Riekhof did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
