The Cooper County Historical Society will present “The History of the Don Carlos Family” at 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Prairie Home United Methodist Church. Dr. Christine Boston will present her research on the Don Carlos Homestead.

The Don Carlos family was one of the original pioneer families to arrive in Cooper County, arriving in the area in 1828. Carter Morgan and Talitha Don Carlos, the founding patriarch and matriarch of the Missouri family, chose to settle outside Prairie Home. Over the next 180 years the Don Carlos family grew not only in size but in social and political influence in the area, setting the foundations for many local traditions that continue to this day.

It is believed the Don Carlos family was one of power and influence in Spain. Don Carlos was a member of the Spanish Royal family. The Don Carlos family had a great deal of cultural and economic influence in both Cooper and Moniteau Counties, which eventually expanded farther into other regions of mid-Missouri.

The program is free and open to the public.
