Make that 2-0 for the Ss. Peter & Paul boys and girls sixth grade basketball teams in the New Franklin.

After picking up wins Monday night in the opening round, the Warriors and Lady Warriors both defeated Fayette Tuesday night in the second round by the scores of 15-14 and 13-8, respectively.

The Lady Warriors, improving to 9-1 on the season, finished the first half in a 6-6 tie against Fayette and then outscored the Falcons 7-2 in the final two periods for the win.

Ss. Peter & Paul coach Lori Rowlett said this was a very physical game, but the girls dug deep and fought hard. “We knew who their go to player was and we focused on keeping the ball out of her hands,” Rowlett said. “I am so proud of this team.”

Isabella Imhoff had six points to lead all scorers for Ss. Peter & Paul. Mabry Caton chipped in three points while Ellise Kirchner and Lauren Thompson added two points each.

Fayette was led by Leah Thies with eight points.

The Ss. Peter & Paul boys, 8-1 on the season, opened the first half with a 11-6 lead against Fayette but was outscored 8-4 in the second half.

Ss. Peter & Paul coach Blake Oswald said Fayette matched up against his team really well.

“They had a very tall kid that caused a lot of problems for us on both ends of the ball,” Oswald said. “However, the effort the boys gave was amazing. We still need to find a way on how to keep the pressure up in the third quarter. We came out flat offensively after the first half which allowed Fayette to get back into the game.”

Cash Leonard and Clayton Schuster each had four points for Ss. Peter & Paul. Schuster also finished the game with nine rebounds and one steal while Leonard added four rebounds and one steal.

Brayden Viertel chipped in three points, four steals and three rebounds while Lucas Schuster contributed two points and three rebounds, Aden Rapp two points and one rebound, Wade Frederick three rebounds and one steal and Grayson Esser with one rebound.
