Pirate wrestlers go 1-1 in season finale against Marshall, Winfield
The Boonville Lady Pirates wrestling team fell short in its bid to qualify for the state tournament in its first season of wrestling Saturday while competing in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament at Holt High School in Wentzville.
With 45 teams competing in the district tournament, which began on Friday and finished on Saturday, head coach Justin Hahn said he knew it was going to be tough with only one class for girls and over 1,400 girls signed up for wrestling this year.
“We had 45 teams in the district,” Hahn said. “The competition was very tought with lots of great matches. We didn’t win a match and I accept the responsibility for that. The two girls that competed in this tournament have worked very hard this season and have done some good things. I told the girls that they were part of something special being on Boonville’s first girls team. Our girls were all first-year wrestlers and they finished the season with a love of the sport. Although I am disappointed I didn’t get anyone to state, I am happy we started girls wrestling and it is only going to grow.”
Senior Sarah Miller competed in the 187 pound weight class for Boonville while Jordan Birk participated in the 130 pound weight class.
Both wrestlers finished 0-2 in their respective weight classes.
Miller closed out the season at 12-8 while Birk finished with a record of 4-9.
The Boonville Pirates wrestling team also closed out the regular season at Marshall last Thursday, losing to the Owls 63-18 and beating Winfield 36-17.
The Pirates finished the season at 6-17 overall.
In the match against Marshall, the Pirates went 3-6 against the Owls with Travis Dell winning by fall in 4:56 in the 170 pound weight class. Peyton Hahn also won by fall in the 220 pound weight class in 2:58. Meanwhile, at heavyweight, Gaige Offineer won by fall in 3:31.
In other matches, Brayden Gamel lost 9-6 in the 106 pound weight class. At 120, Caleb Martin lost by fall in 1:13. At 138, Eric Bundy lost by fall in 3:28. At 145, Brayden McFarland lost by fall in 3:51. At 182, Dakota Rapp lost by injury default. Meanwhile, at 195, Dustyn Taylor lost by fall in 1:18.
In the match against Winfield, the Pirates finished 0-3 but picked up forfeits in six matches.
In the only matches wrestled, Gamel lost by fall in 1:26. McFarland lost by fall in 1:20. Meanwhile, at 170, Dell lost by technical fall 17-2 in 3:06.
Hahn said the Pirates had a tough night against Marshall and Winfield.
“Our bright spots were Travis Dell, Peyton Hahn and Gaige Offineer,” Hahn said. “Winfield only had four wrestlers so most of our kids didn’t get matches. We won the dual but I would like to get that from victories not opens. Against Marshall, we looked flat and not ready to wrestle.”
The Boonville Pirates wrestling team will compete Friday and Saturday in districts at Mexico High School.
