Three was the magic number for the Boonville Pirates wrestling team Saturday in the Higginsville Co-Ed Tournament.
Three as in the number of wrestlers who placed third overall in their respective weight classes.
Although Boonville was missing one of its top wrestlers due to injury, the Pirates still managed to finish 10th out of 15 teams. The Lady Pirates were 14th out of 17 teams.
The three medalists for Boonville were Sarah Miller at 187, Travis Dell at 170 and Dakota Rapp at 182.
Boonville Pirates wrestling coach Justin Hahn said the boys and girls participated in their first coed tournament of the year.
“It was a fun experience having both teams wrestle together and I hope to have more tournaments like this next year,” Hahn said. “We had some kids get tough draws but the kids got valuable tournament experience. Sarah wrestled hard, had good defense, a good overtime win, and a good double leg.  Dakota kept his tournament placing streak going.  He has placed in every tournament this year.  Dakota was good on his feet and wrestled well in the situations we worked on this week.   Travis also had a good tournament. He was tough on top, and in his third place match avenged an overtime loss from earlier in the tournament.   I have high goals for our wrestling teams heading into districts.  We will be taking three girls to districts this weekend in Wentzville.   Our boys dual Marshall on Thursday and then will be heading to the district tournament in Mexico the following weekend.”
