The Ss. Peter & Paul boys sixth grade basketball team led St. Peters from start to finish for a 32-10 win Thursday night at Marshall.
The Warriors, 1-0 on the season, outscored St. Peters in all four quarters of play and led 11-6 at the half and 16-8 after three quarters of play. Ss. Peter & Paul also held a 16-2 advantage in the final period to win the game by 22.
Ss. Peter & Paul sixth grade coach Blake Oswald said definitely had those “first game jitters” in the first quarter, but all-in-all an excellent first game.
“Adversity forced us to play with four players and these four kids played outstanding,” Oswald said. “Brayden Viertel had a great game handling the ball, anticipating passes, causing turnovers, and leading the pack on fast breaks. Clayton Schuster took control down low defensively causing bad passes and cleaning up the rebounds as well as dominated offensively. Grayson Esser did a good job causing havoc on the perimeter forcing 2 costly steals. Cash Leonard was non-stop on both ends of the ball creating opportunities for his teammates. With this being the season opener, playing this well and finishing strong. I am excited to see what this season holds for this team.  We still have things we need to work on and can only get better as the season progresses.”
Clayton Schuster had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead Ss. Peter & Paul. Brayden Viertel finished the game with 11 points and five steals while Cash Leonard added four points, three rebounds and one steal and Grayson Esser with three rebounds and two steals.
