Boonville Pirates wrestling coach Kyle Newham used the word “decent” when referring to the first match of the 2020 season Thursday night against Hallsville and Osage.
While finishing 1-1 in both the boys and girls matches, the Pirate wrestlers fell in the opening match against Osage 59-12 but then won 47-36 over Hallsville.
As for the Lady Pirates, they also defeated Hallsville 18-0 but then lost to Osage 24-12 even though both teams went 1-1 in matches.
In the match against Hallsville, Newham said the Pirates didn’t match up well but was able to win the majority of the matches and get falls, which they must do to be able to win duals since they are giving up so many points to start with.
“Again, I thought it was a decent start back to the mat,” Newham said. “The kids have worked hard over break. As for the match against Osage, we wrestled tough in many of the matches but they showed why they are the top team in the conference. I really liked our fight. We may have lost some of the matches but they fought the whole time they were on the mat.
“I thought that Peyton Hahn wrestled well and was in complete control of his matches against the Osage kid and really rode him tough, and then was able to get a quick fall on a body lock in his second match against Hallsville.”
In the dual against Osage, the Pirate wrestlers finished 3-6 in actual matches with wins at 120, 220 and 285.
In the 120-pound weight class, Caleb Martin won by 7-3 decision over Jacob Zelle. Hahn also won his match by decision against Connor Arrowood 5-0 in the 220 pound weight class. Meanwhile, at 285, Gaige Offineer won by fall over Tanner Gardner in 3:49.

As for the Lady Pirate wrestlers, Newham said the girls wrestled well in a couple of matches they were able to get.
“Eliza (Adams) had a tough match against a girl that took third place at state last year but she battled tough,” Newham said. “Sarah (Miller) was able to explode out on bottom and get an escape and takedown and then pinned her opponent in a half. She has worked hard in the room over break and I’m glad to see her start the second half of the year with a win.”
In the first match against Hallsville, the Lady Pirate wrestlers won all three matches by forfeits. Meanwhile, in the match against Osage, Adams lost by fall against Abbey Cordia in the 135 pound weight class in 2:52. Meanwhile, at 187, Miller won by fall over Sophia Jeffries in 2:38.
