Boonville Pirates wrestling coach Kyle Newham knew it would be tough with five opens going into the Moberly Dual Tournament on Friday.
With three matches on Friday and five again on Saturday, the Pirates actually did better than expected by finishing 3-5-which Newham said was a pleasant surprise considering they were giving up many points due to opens to start every dual.
“Overall on matches wrestled we finished 24-21 so that is a positive to come out ahead over eight duals to wrestle that way,” Newham said. “We had two wrestlers finish the weekend undefeated in sophomore Travis Dell at 170 and sophomore Peyton Hall at 220. Both of these young men had a great weekend wrestling smart and aggressive and picking the right spots to attack and getting falls when they were in that situation. I was pleased with the mindset those guys had considering the start of Christmas break and they came in and wanted to wrestle and compete every round. We had many bright spots over the past two days but at times still have that one moment in the match where we make one mistake and cost us points or even the match. But as the first half of the season closes I like what this group of kids has done and the direction they are heading. I think that the work we put in over Christmas break will be very important to getting off to a solid start for the second half of the season.”
