The LSE Pirates eighth grade basketball team played one of its best games of the season Wednesday night in Boonville by beating the Marshall Owls 59-34.
The Pirates, improving to 4-11 on the season, opened the first half with a 35-16 lead against Marshall and then outscored the Owls 24-18 in the second half.
LSE eighth grade coach Ryan Lyons said this was “BY FAR” the best four quarters of basketball the team has played all season.
“My boys from buzzer to buzzer got after it, caused turnovers in our press, finished better at the rim, and got to the line more times than we have all season,” Lyons said. “I believe it the first time we’ve had three players in double figures and we rebounded very well, often giving Marshall only one-shot attempt. Proud of the effort and excited to get a win.”
Bentley Turner led three players in double figures for LSE with 24 points along with seven steals and four rebounds.
Blake Griffin finished the game with 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal while Will Stock had 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and one assist, Dakota Troost six points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists, Langston Hall two points, eight rebounds, one steal and one assist, Dakota Williams two points and two rebounds, Drew Rhorer two points, one steal and one assist and Josh Barber with two points and one rebound.
LSE also finished the game, shooting 40 percent from the field and 52 percent from the foul line.
As for the LSE boys seventh grade basketball team, they fell to Marshall 47-35.
The Pirates, dropping to 5-6 on the season, led Marshall 21-12 at the half and 33-28 after three quarters of play but was outscored 19-2 in the final period to suffer the loss.
LSE coach Curtis Walk said the boys played well early. “We just couldn’t get any shots to fall down the stretch,” Walk said. “We played well enough to win it, they just got hot in the fourth quarter and we didn’t.”
Rhad Leathers led the scoring for LSE with 13 points along with four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Cooper Pfeiffer finished the game with 10 points,  12 rebounds, three steals and one assist while Zeke Pritchett added five points, six steals and four rebounds, D’Avion Jones four points and two rebounds, Jamal Franklin three points, one rebound and one steal, Max Rapp one rebound and one steal, Elijah Butler two rebounds and Gabe Mederios with one rebound.
