The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team put it all together Wednesday night on the road against the Eldon Mustangs.
While the Lady Pirates have seldom had pitching, hitting and defense all working in one game this season, it was on full display against Eldon. Not only did Boonville win the game 16-8, they also scratched together 14 hits. As for the pitching, freshman Abby Pulliam and sophomore Emma West locked down Eldon hitters through seven innings of play to help Boonville improve to 5-11 overall and 3-3 in the Tri-County Conference.
“Tonight’s game was fun to be a part of,” said Boonville coach Christie Zoeller. “We got on top early, which is something we’ve struggled with in past games and we continued to hit the ball hard the whole game. In the third inning our pitcher, Abby Pulliam, had an issue with her contact and we had to get that worked out. After that Eldon tried to make a comeback but we were able to hold them off. I was proud of the way we hit the ball tonight and how aggressive we were in the bases. I can only hope our bats show up like this at districts.”
The Lady Pirates still have plenty of softball left to play, starting with the Carthage Tournament this weekend and then at Blair Oaks on Monday, Oct. 14.
Nonetheless, the Lady Pirates did it the right way against Eldon by pushing across two runs in the first and four again in the second to make it 6-0. Then, after Eldon rallied back to cut the lead to one at 6-5 after adding three in the third and two in the fourth, Boonville all but sealed the victory by tacking on three more runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth to extend the lead to 16-5. The Lady Mustangs made it interesting with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth but were no match for Boonville in the earlier innings.
Pulliam picked up the win in the circle for Boonville, improving her record to 2-3 on the season. Pulliam pitched seven innings and struck out 10 batters while giving up six runs-4 earned-on seven hits and four walks. Emma West then came in and pitched part of the seventh and allowed two runs on one hit and one walk.
Chloe Ruark took the loss for Eldon.
As for the hitting in the game for the Lady Pirates, Bryanna Jones went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Brooke Eichelberger was 2-for-4 with two triples and one RBI while Kourtney Kendrick added a single, home run and four RBIs, West with a single, triple and three RBIs, Olivia Eichelberger with a single, triple and two RBIs, Daylynn Baker with a single and one RBI, Abby Pulliam and Reese Lavers each with one single and Alexis Albin with one RBI.
