The New Franklin softball and baseball teams picked up two big wins in the conference on Thursday by beating the Sturgeon Bulldogs by the scores of 12-6 and 7-2, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs, 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the Central Activities Conference, opened the game with one run in the bottom half of the first only to have Sturgeon rally back with one in its half of the third. However it was pretty much all New Franklin after that as the Lady Bulldogs plated three more in the bottom half of the third, two again in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth for the victory.
New Franklin softball coach Ross Dowell said this was a big step for this team and a game the Lady Bulldogs had to fight for. “This game was back and forth and then we scored three in the third and two in the fourth with a rally started by Carly Dorson with two outs. That was big. In the seventh, we made the mistakes, which led to Sturgeon scoring two.”
Alexia Sprick picked up the win for the Lady Bulldogs by giving up six runs-three earned-on four hits and five walks in seven innings.
Sprick also led the hitting attack in the game for New Franklin with a double, triple and one RBI. Abby Maupin had a single, triple and one RBI while Isabelle Matney added a single, double and three RBIs, Kayce Hundley with one triple and one RBI, Kristen Flick with one double and one RBI, Carly Dorson, Jayna Matthews and Addy Salmon each with one single and Sidney Swearingen with one RBI.
As for the New Franklin baseball team, they also jumped out early with four runs in the first and then one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings of play. Sturgeon scored both of its runs in the sixth inning.
New Franklin coach Erich Gerding said Gavin (Bishop) did a whale of a job again.  “Pumping strikes, lots of quality pitches,” Gerding said. “Offensively, we were able to break through in the third. Crayton (Gallatin) led off with a single up the middle, stole second, followed by an error and a stolen base.  Gavin singled to left and Colten singled up the middle.  With runners on second and third, Zac (Held) laid down a beauty that we were able to score two on.  From that point, we were able to scratch a run across each of the last three innings, which was huge.  It was another total team effort again. Eight guys in our lineup had a hit and either an assist or put out.  We just did a lot of little things the right way which turned into a big win for us.  I’m very proud of these guys.”
Bishop went the distance and struck out 11 batters while giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.
Crayton Gallatin had two hits and one RBI in the game for New Franklin. Jackson Dorson tripled while Keaton Eads doubled and Zac Held, Gavin Bishop, Tysen Dowell and Colten Collyott each singled. Held also drove in two runs while Bishop, Collyott and Clayton Wilmsmeyer each had one RBI.
