New Franklin senior Shelby Breshears was spot on Wednesday in the shot put during the annual Larry Littrell Relays in Glasgow.
With districts starting over the weekend at Lafayette County in Higginsville, Breshears appears to be ready for what the competition brings after placing first in the shot put with a season best throw at 32’-5 1/2”.
Of course that wasn’t the only event Breshears placed in on Wednesday. Breshears also ran a leg on the 4 x 100 meter relay team along with Abby Maupin, Mallori Burnett and Davi Smith, which finished second in a time of 55.19 seconds.
In the final team standings, Glasgow ran away with both titles as the Lady Yellowjackets out-distanced Salisbury 153-87. The Glasgow boys also finished 34 points better than Salisbury by a score of 122-88.
The New Franklin girls finished fifth overall with 55 points while the boys placed ninth overall with 19 points.
Abby Maupin also had a successful day for the Lady Bulldogs by finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 15’-3/4” and third in the 100 meter dash in 14.26 seconds. Davi Smith, meanwhile, finished third in the high jump with a height of 4’-11”.
As for the New Franklin boys, junior Tyler Perkins finished second in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:09.87.
“The Larry Littrell Relays was our last tune up before Districts on Saturday,” said New Franklin coach Adam Quest. “I put all of the kids in the same events that they are going to do Saturday, to give them a taste of how it will be.  It is also a last opportunity to see how we stack up against some of our district competition.  I think that we have put ourselves in a position to have several events be successful on Saturday.  Several athletes set season bests or personal bests today, which is a good thing heading into districts.
“Freshman Abby Maupin came home with three medals total.  She finished second in the long jump and third in the 100.  She was also the opening leg (with Mallori Burnett, Davi Smith, and Shelby Breshears) of the 4 x 100 relay that finished second.  Senior Shelby Breshears also had a career day in the shot put.  She set a new personal best by almost two feet, winning the event for our only first place finish of the day.  Davi Smith tied her season best in the high jump, finishing in third place.  On the boys side, Tyler Perkins continued his success in the 800, setting a new season best time of 2:09.87 and finishing in second place.  Tyler has really been improving his times this last week or two.  He is very determined to do well on Saturday and is peaking at the right time.”
Teams that will compete in the Class 1 District 6 Track Meet Saturday in Higginsville are Brunswick, Bucklin, Concordia, Glasgow, Green City, Hale, Keytesville, Linn County, Malta Bend, Meadville, New Franklin, Norborne, Northwestern, Pilot Grove, Salisbury, Santa Fe, Slater, Sweet Springs and Tina-Avalon.
The top four finishers in each event will move on to the sectional track meet on Saturday, May 11th. From there, the top four will advance to the state track meet on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18 in Jefferson City.
