The Boonville Lady Pirates soccer team continues to struggle scoring goals.
On the road Monday night against a district opponent, the Lady Pirates managed just one goal in 80 minutes while dropping a 9-1 decision against the Oak Grove Lady Panthers.
Boonville Lady Pirates soccer coach Kaz Hazell said Oak Grove was a solid team. “Oak Grove capitalized on our mistakes and it cost us the game,” Hazell said. “We are continuing to work on our defensive skills and being mentally ready before a game. The girls are working hard, but we are unable to find the back of the net.”
The Lady Pirates, dropping to 0-5 on the season, definitely faced an uphill battle against Oak Grove. Trailing 6-0 at the half after giving up goals at the 3, 4, 22, 23, 25 and 28 minute mark, Boonville also surrendered the first goal of the second half at the 47 minute mark. Meanwhile, at the 60 minute mark, the Lady Pirates finally got on the board as senior Sariana Barbarotta found the back of the net on an assist by Olivia Gholson to make it 6-1. Boonville never got any closer as Oak Grove added two more goals at the 68 and 79 minute mark to extend the lead.
Oak Grove also finished the match with 13 shot attempts and nine shots on goal. Boonville, meanwhile, had seven shot attempts and one shot on goal.
Junior goalie Sarah Miller also had a busy night with another double digit saving opportunity with 10.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Oak Grove 1-0 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Hazell said the JV team played well against Oak Grove. “We still make some key mistakes on defense, such as turning away from the ball and being too shy attacking the ball in the air,” Hazell said. “We did, however, pull out the win. Mille Dorman scored her first goal of the season to bring home the win. MacKenzee Troost also earned her second shutout of the season.”
Dorman’s goal came at the 16 minute mark with Zoe Coffelt, another senior, picking up the assist.
Boonville finished the match with one shot attempt and three shots on goal while Oak Grove had two shot attempts and three shots on goal.
Troost had five saves in the match.
The Boonville Lady Pirates soccer team will travel to Moberly tonight for a match starting at 5 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Boonville will host Pleasant Hill in a make up game at the soccer field starting at 1 p.m.
