Abby Maupin and Tyler Perkins captured first place finishes in the Westran Open Wednesday in Huntsville.
Maupin finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 32’-6 1/2” while Perkins won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:26.05.
Fayette boys finished first in the meet with 131.5 points while South Shelby took second with 122 points. New Franklin finished ninth overall with 25 points.
In the girls final team standings, Marceline captured first with 191 points while Salisbury finished second with 158 points. New Franklin girls finished fifth overall with 43 points.
New Franklin coach Adam Quest said he was pleased with the teams performance at the Westran Open for a first meet.
“It has been a tough few weeks of practice for us,” Quest said. “With the bad weather, we haven’t been able to get outside much to practice.  For the field events especially, it was only the second or third time that the kids had gotten to jump or throw.
“We definitely have some things to get excited about.  Freshman Abby Maupin ended up winning the triple jump, while Tyler Perkins won the 800.  Davi Smith and Shelby Breshears both had wonderful jumps in the high jump, finishing in third and fourth, respectively.  Our girls 4 x 100 meter relay had a solid run as well, finishing in second place.  The boys 4 x 800 meter relay also ran a good race, finishing in third place.  There is definitely a lot for us to build on as the season progresses.”
Maupin also ran a leg on the 4 x 100-meter relay team along with Mallori Burnett, Davi Smith and Shelby Breshears, which finished second in a time of 57.84 seconds.
Smith finished third in the high jump at 4’-10” while Breshears took fourth in the same event with a jump of 4’-8”.
The only other place finish for the boys came in the 4 x 800-meter relay. The team of Perkins, Douglass Creason, Asa Fisher and David Brucks finished third in a time of 10:00.20.
