The Bunceton Lady Dragons softball team had the perfect bounce back game against Northwest of Hughesville on Tuesday.
After dropping their season opener against La Monte on Monday 13-3, the Lady Dragons came back Tuesday in their home opener to beat Northwest 23-13 in five innings.
Bunceton coach Ashton Hays said the girls played really well against Northwest. “We had some good hits and good plays defensively,” Hays said.
Bunceton, 1-1 on the season, trailed 13-6 after 3 1/2 innings but exploded for 16 runs in the bottom half of the fourth and never trailed again.
Senior Taylor Burnett picked up the win in the circle for Bunceton with five strikeouts in five innings.
As for the hitting in the game, Cara Bishop went 3-for-4 with two singles, one double and two RBIs. Chloe Moser finished the game with two singles while Taylyn Heilman and Burnett added one single and three RBIs each and Maddie Brandes with one single.
In the game against La Monte, Hays said it was the first game of the season and also the first time on a field.
“We started off rough but then we got our first game jitters out and started playing better,” Hays said. “We had a few errors that caused them to start their runs, but on a good note these errors are things that we can work on and get better at. For our first time ever being on a field we did pretty good.”
La Monte broke the game open against Bunceton with a seven-run fifth inning and then tacked on two more in the sixth to win by the mercy rule. Bunceton scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Taylor Burnett took the loss for Bunceton despite striking out six batters in five innings. Oerke was the winning pitcher for La Monte.
Alyssa Welch, Taylynn Heilman, Cara Bishop and Chloe Moser each had two hits in the game for Bunceton. Amaris Vaca had one single.
