Expect the unexpected.
That’s how Boonville Pirates golf coach Rob VanderLinden looked at Monday’s quadrangular meet at Fulton Country Club against a field of three teams.
While facing Fulton, Eugene and South Callaway in the season opener, the Pirates golf team performed better than expected considering the weather the last few weeks by capturing first with a team score of 180.
Fulton and Eugene tied for second with a score of 243 while South Callaway placed third at 270.
Boonville also had the meet medalist as junior Brayden Page shot a 4-over par 40 with five pars and four bogeys for nine holes.
“The first match of the year is always a question mark,” VanderLinden said. “Golf courses are not in the best shape, very little outdoor practicing because of the weather, and younger golfers having to step up and play different roles on the team. We were also missing one of our varsity golfers because of spring break. However the results from today were better than anticipated. Adam Schneringer, Grady Baker, Brant Whitaker and Brayden Page all shot or tied their personal bests. It was also the first time Brayden was a meet medalist with his plus four score. Overall, a very successful opening day for the Pirates, but the best part was all of the discussing how they could have played and scored better. Hopefully they will take this attitude towards the next meet and practices.”
Erin Brady of Fulton finished second overall with a score of 44, followed by Grady Baker and Adam Schneringer tied for third at 46 and Cole Corbitt of Boonville fifth at 48.
Schneringer also had one birdie, two pars and two bogeys for nine holes while Baker finished with one birdie, one par and four bogeys and Corbitt with one par and five bogeys.
Tyler Schuster and Brant Whitaker each finished with a round of 57 while Lucas Ziegelbein shot a round of 58. Schuster had two pars and one bogey while Whitaker had one bogey and Ziegelbein with one par and one bogey.
The Boonville Pirates golf team will host California in the conference opener today at Hail Ridge Golf Course starting at 4 p.m.
