The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs basketball team had its season cut short Monday night in the opening round of the Class 2 District 14 Tournament at Stover.
In a No. 2 versus No. 7 matchup, Cole Camp outscored New Franklin in all four quarters and held the Lady Bulldogs to single digits in every period en route to a 50-19 victory.
In other games on Monday, No. 1 Tipton cruised past No. 8 Sacred Heart 69-30 while No. 3 Smithton upended No. 6 Sweet Springs 46-41 in overtime. The Fayette girls also prevailed against Stover in a No. 4 versus No. 5 matchup by a score of 61-51.
Tournament action will continue on Wednesday, with Tipton playing Fayette at 6 p.m. and Cole Camp battling Smithton at 7:30.
New Franklin, who closed out the season at 7-18 overall, trailed Cole Camp 18-2 after first period’s end and 29-9 at the break. Meanwhile, in the second half, Cole Camp outscored New Franklin 21-10 to win the game by 31.
New Franklin coach Morgan Vetter said she hates to see the seniors go on the last game of the season but sends them a big thank you and warm wishes as they move on in life. “This is the first group that I had as freshman all the way to seniors,” Vetter said. “Bittersweet moment for all.”
Williams had 16 and Harding 10 for Cole Camp.
For New Franklin, Abby Maupin tossed in eight while Lauren Evans added seven and Shelby Breshears with four.
Cole Camp also finished the game 4 of 6 from the line for 67 percent while New Franklin hit on just 8 of 17 shots for 47 percent.
Tournament action will continue on the boys side tonight, with No. 1 Fayette playing No. 8 Stover at 4:30 p.m., followed by No. 4 New Franklin versus No. 5 Tipton at 6, No. 2 Cole Camp versus No. 7 Sweet Springs at 7:30 and No. 3 Sacred Heart versus No. 6 Smithton at 9.
