The Pilot Grove Lady Tigers basketball team picked up its 18th win of the season by turning back the Slater Wildcats in CAC action Thursday night in Pilot Grove 69-29.
The Lady Tigers, 18-6 overall and 6-3 in league play, outscored Slater in all but the fourth quarter and led 23-8 after one, 45-15 at the half and 65-21 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the fourth, Slater rallied back with a 8-4 advantage.
“We came out with to get back on track by playing all out every play,” said Pilot Grove coach Linda Scott. “We went after every loose ball.  We played to be in total control tonight.  We have worked very hard this week to get back to playing Pilot Grove basketball. Hard work in practice has got us back in the game.  Melanie Wolfe had her best game of the season.  Emily Schuup had a super second half.  Chloe Schlotzhauer had her best all around game of the season.  Grack Phillips set the pace for us in the 1at half.  Ayln Lorenz, Sr had her best game of the year.  Ayln battled tonight.  We just played so well as a group tonight.  This is the game we needed to get us ready for a tough districts.  Very proud of the 4 Seniors this season.  Nice to see everyone on the team playing with smiles on their faces tonight.”
Emily Schupp and Melanie Wolfe each had 21 points in the game for Pilot Grove.  Schupp also finished the game with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals while Wolfe had 10 rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Chloe Schlotzhauer finished the game with 10 points, nine rebounds and two assists while Grace Phillips added 10 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal, Reagan McFatrich three points and one steal, Alyn Lorenz two points, two rebounds and two steals, Natalie Rentel two points and three rebounds, Abby Schupp with three rebounds and Natalie Glenn with two rebounds.
Slater was led by Abby Uhhik with 13 points.
As for the Pilot Grove boys, they fell to Slater 65-52.
The Tigers, dropping to 11-13 overall and 4-5 in the CAC, trailed Slater 18-11 after one and 35-23 at the half before rallying back with a 18-10 advantage in the third quarter to cut the lead to four at 45-41. However in the final period, Slater outscored Pilot Grove 20-11 for the victory.
“It was a great night tonight to wrap up our regular season,” said Pilot Grove coach Derek Skaggs. “I have now been with a couple of these guys for six years and a few four years. With six seniors we couldn’t possibly start them all so we ran all of our possessions through them in the first quarter becoming successful on a few. Ultimately we came up just one guy short on the night, but we were able to accomplish what we sat out to do and also had a shot to compete to win. On Senior night I will take that every senior night. We appreciate all the time these guys have spent with us thus far, but I know we have unfinished business ahead of us. We look forward to starting districts next week.”
Chandler Zybell had 28 and Keegan Zybell 10 for Slater.
For Pilot Grove, Cole Meisenheimer tallied 20 points while Gavin Shepherd added 10, Bailey Quint nine, Lucas Fahrendorf, Bo Vinson, Phillip Brown and Laben Twenter with three each and Dorsan Hern with two.
