The New Franklin boys and girls basketball teams did just enough in a CAC matchup Monday night at Slater.
While the Lady Bulldogs prevailed against Slater 47-43 with three players scoring in double figures, the New Franklin boys had to go the extra mile by edging the Wildcats 53-51.
The Lady Bulldogs, 6-16 overall and 1-7 in the CAC, opened the first quarter with a 8-4 lead against Slater. However, in the second quarter, the Lady Wildcats battled back with a 15-11 advantage to tie the game at 19-all. The second half was just as close as the first, with New Franklin holding a 28-24 scoring edge for the victory.
New Franklin coach Morgan Vetter said this was a good team win. “Everybody played well and everybody contributed,” Vetter said.
Abby Maupin led three players in double figures for New Franklin with 15 points. Shelby Breshears chipped in 14, Lauren Evans 13, Campbell Cooper three and Kristen Flick with two.
As for the scoring in the game for Slater, Emily Grimes had 12 and Abby Uhlich with 11.
The Lady Bulldogs also finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field while Slater converted on 8 of 11 shots for 73 percent.
As for the New Franklin boys, they struggled early on while trailing Slater 13-11 after one and 30-21 at the break. However in the second half, the Bulldogs couldn’t seem to miss while outscoring Slater 32-21 for the victory.
“It was a good team effort and everyone contributed to our tough road win,” said New Franklin coach Ross Dobson. “I am glad the boys never gave up and kept fighting.  Slater is a tough place to play and they are a good team and well coached.  I thought it was a hard fought game and glad we came out on top.”
Tyler Perkins and Kolby Anson each had 12 points to lead all scorers for New Franklin, who improved to 16-7 overall and 5-3 in the CAC. Gavin Bishop tossed in 10 points while Carter Bailey and Tre’ Cowans added six each, Jackson Dorson five and Tysen Dowell with two.
For Slater, Chandler Zdybel had 21 and Keegan Zdybel nine.
