Johna Burris had 15 points and teammate Alayna Hall added 10 as the Sturgeon girls defeated New Franklin Friday night in CAC action at New Franklin by a score of 51-26.
The Lady Bulldogs, dropping to 5-16 overall and 0-6 in conference play, trailed Sturgeon 28-13 at the half 37-18 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the fourth, Sturgeon outscored New Franklin 14-8 for the victory.
New Franklin coach Morgan Vetter said after a tough loss, a positive was that all seven players put up points on the board. “We will wrap up our final week of the regular season this week and then pick up districts the following week,” Vetter said.
Camryon Orf finished the game with eight points for Sturgeon while Amber Haas and Emma Bright added six points each.
For New Franklin, Shelby Breshears had 10, Lauren Evans five, Abby Maupin four, Kristen Flick, Madelyn Chaney and Kayce Hundley each with two and Campbell Cooper with one.
As for the New Franklin boys, they also fell to Sturgeon by a score of 51-41.
The Bulldogs, dropping to 15-7 overall and 4-3 in the CAC, led Sturgeon 8-4 after first period's end but was outscored 13-7 in the second to trail by two at 17-15. New Franklin never got any closer after that as as Sturgeon came out and outscored the Bulldogs 34-26 in the second half for the victory.
New Franklin coach Ross Dobson said you could definitely tell that both teams haven't touched a basketball in a few days. "It took longer for us to get back into the routine of things and it was too late," Dobson said. "We are looking to finish out the season strong."
Kenny Stone had 16 and Jake Snider 12 to lead all scorers for Sturgeon.
For New Franklin, Gavin Bishop had 18, Tyler Perkins 12, Carter Bailey four, Tre' Cowans three and Tysen Dowell and Crayton Gallatin each with two points.
New Franklin also finished the game shooting 44 percent from the foul line, hitting just 7 of 16 shots.
