The LSE Pirates wrestling team may have had its best day yet after finishing 22-23 on Saturday in the Moberly Tournament.
While competing against Moberly, Chillicothe, Hannibal, Brookfield, Blair Oaks, Owensville, Kirksville, Centralia and Camdenton, LSE wrestling coach Summer Young said the Pirate grapplers won matches that were close because they didn’t give up.
“I thought we wrestled really well today,” Young said. “Ryder Comegys had a really great comeback match and ending up pinning his opponent at the end of the third period. Gage Hodges also had a great match, winning in overtime. Katelyn DeWeese had an exciting match wrestling all three periods. We medaled three placers: Tyson White, Gage Hodges and Abram Taylor. Then, Xavier Flippin, placed second.”
Xavier Flippin finished second with a record of 4-1 in the 136 pound weight class while Tyson White placed third at 2-3 in the 110-pound weight class, Gage Hodges third at 3-2 in the 139 pound weight class and Abram Taylor third at 3-2 in the 146 pound weight class.
In other weight classes, Audrionnah Donahue finished 3-2 at 105; Caleb Martin 2-3 at 111; Ryan Dell 3-2 at 114; Ryder Comegys 2-3 at 143 and Katelyn DeWeese 0-5 at 190.
The LSE Pirates wrestling team also competed Friday at Higginsville and finished with a record of 7-12 overall.
While facing teams like Odessa, Richmond, Carrollton, Higginsville and Lexington, Young said this was a night where the wrestlers looked good but didn’t always see it on the scoreboard. “Gage Hodges wrestled the same kid three times and each match he made improvements and found himself able to score more points,” Young said. “Abram Taylor had an impressive last match. He kept exciting the crowd by scoring and then finally he ended it with a third period pin. Today was fun.”
Audrionnah Donahue and Caleb Martin both finished 2-0 in the tournament while Tyson White and Abram Taylor were both 1-1 and Ryan Dell 1-2. Other wrestlers competing in the tournament were Xavier Flippin, Gage Hodges and Ryder Comegys.
The LSE Pirates wrestling team will travel to Marshall for a match tonight starting at 5 p.m.
