Improve to 17-3 on the season
The Pilot Grove Lady Tigers softball team finished the Versailles Tournament at 2-1 to place third overall on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers, 17-3 on the season, beat Marshall 5-3 in the opening round and then lost to Osage 4-2 in the semifinals before beating Iberia in eight innings by the same score in the third place game.
Pilot Grove coach Neal Bailey said the girls did not play as well as they typically do but they played well enough to take third in a very competitive tournament. “We saw some good teams that pus us in situations that will ultimately make us better,” Bailey said.
In the opening game against Marshall, the Lady Tigers led 5-0 after four before giving up three runs in the top half of the sixth.
Melanie Wolfe picked up the win in the circle for Pilot Grove by striking out seven batters and giving up just three runs on six hits and one walk in seven innings.
Wolfe also doubled and drove in three runs for the Lady Tigers while Danae Lammers also doubled and Emily Schupp, Reagan McFatrich and Abby Schupp each singled. Samarah Bailey also drove in one run.
In the semifinal game against Osage, the Lady Indians broke a 1-1 tie after four by pushing across two runs in the sixth and one again in the seventh for the win.
Samarah Bailey took the loss for Pilot Grove despite striking out 14 batters in seven innings. Bailey also gave up just four runs on four hits and two walks.
Emily Schupp went 2-for-4 in the game with a single and a triple. Bailey had two singles and two RBIs while Natalie Rentel added two singles, Wolfe with one double and Abby Schupp with one single.
In the third place game, Pilot Grove broke a 2-2 tie after five innings with two runs in the top-half of the eighth for the victory.
Bailey again picked up the win for the Lady Tigers by striking out 12 batters in eight innings. She also gave up two runs on four hits to improve to 15-3 on the season. Bailey also had three singles for Pilot Grove while Wolfe added a single, double and two RBIs, Rentel with two singles and one RBI and Abby Schupp with one single.
