Glasgow’s Zyshonne Cowans and Alyssa Yung led a field of runners Saturday during the annual Katy Trail Invitational 5K run in New Franklin.
With 18 boys and 15 girls competing in the race from New Franklin, Glasgow and Higbee, Cowans crossed the finish line in a time of 21 minutes and 38 seconds while Yung had the winning time in the girls division in 25:43.
New Franklin cross-country coach Adam Quest said it’s always great to hour your own meet.
“Even though it is a very small meet, it still gives the kids the opportunity to run on their home turf and have lots of fan support,” Quest said.  “We had a record number of athletes competing at the meet this year.”
New Franklin’s Sam Ridgeway finished second overall in a time of 21:59 while Tyler Perkins placed fourth in 22:59, Asa Fischer eighth in 24:43, Hayden Wiseman 12th in 26:04, Douglass Creason 13th in 26:50 and Logan Pierce 17th in 33:48.
For the New Franklin girls, Mallori Burnett placed fifth overall in a time of 28:38.
Quest said he was extremely pleased with the way Sam Ridgeway ran.
“He ended up finishing in second place overall and ran a very strong race from start to finish.  Tyler Perkins also had a wonderful race, finishing in fourth place overall,” Quest said.  “Those two boys always compete very hard, and usually end up competing against each other harder than they do against other schools.  I am excited to see them push each other to be even more successful as the season goes on.  I was also very pleased with the performance of Mallori Burnett.  This was her first time competing at the varsity level this season, and she ended up doing very well, finishing in 5th place overall.  I think as she continues to work in practice, results like this will become more common for her."
In the middle school division, which consisted of 1.5 miles, Derek Rocket of Higbee had the fastest time in 10:24 while Carly Dorson of New Franklin crossed the finish line first for the girls in 11:41.
Jacob Marshall finished second overall in 10:28 while Drake Clark placed sixth in 11:05, Ryan August seventh in 11:18, Sawyer Felten ninth in 11:47, Owen Curry 10th in 11:56 and Connor Wilmsmeyer 18th in 14:50.
For the New Franklin girls, Natalie Wiseman finished eighth in a time of 13:41 while Brooke McGowan placed 11th in 14:54.
Twenty boys and 19 girls competed in the middle school race.
New Franklin middle school cross-country coach Benji Dorson said this was the first meet of the season for the middle school.
“We have a strong boys team that should be fun to watch,” Dorson said. “As for the girls, they have been working very hard putting in the miles the past few weeks and I was very proud of their effort.”
