The LSE Pirates seventh and eighth grade football team opened the 2018 season on a winning note Wednesday at home against the Southern Boone Eagles.
Although it took a second half rally by the Pirates in the seventh grade game to beat Southern Boone 30-24, the eighth grade Pirates had it a little easier while prevailing against the Eagles 26-8.
LSE Pirates football coach Curtis Walk said the seventh grade team really came out flat and nervous in the first half. “We were a different team in the second half,” Walk said. “I’m proud of the way our kids came out and battled in the second half. It’s exciting for our kids to be a part of.”
LSE trailed Southern Boone 24-6 at the half before rallying with 24 unanswered points in the second half for the win.
Tyson White completed 1 of 5 passes in the game for LSE for 21 yards. Rhodes Leonard, meanwhile, finished the game with seven carries for 79 yards and one touchdown. Xavier Flippin had nine carries for 72 yards and two scores. He also scored on a two-point conversion. As for Dakota Troost, he had one kick off return for 65 yards on the opening drive and eight carries for 87 yards with one two-point conversion. He also had the only pass reception in the game for 21 yards.
On defense, Troost led the Pirates with six solo stops, five assisted tackles and one sack.
Xavier Flippin had nine solo tackles and two assists while Rhodes Leonard added seven solo tackles and two assisted, Eli Stock four solo tackles and three assisted, Lawson Edwards two solo tackles, two assisted and one sack, Andrew Rhorer and Abram Taylor each with four tackles and Travis Dell with three solo stops and one sack.
In the eighth grade game, the LSE Pirates led Southern Boone from the opening kick off while scoring three touchdowns in the first half to go up 20-0. LSE also hit paydirt in the third quarter to extend the lead to 26-0 before giving up a score in the fourth.
Walk said the boys really came out and executed well against Southern Boone. “Our kids put in a lot of work in the off-season,” Walk said. “It really showed tonight. I’m excited to see what these kids can do for the rest of the season.”
Owen Armentrout led all rushers for LSE with 10 carries for 131 yards and one touchdown and two catches for 20 yards.
Colby Caton finished the game with nine carries for 93 yards and one catch for 40 yards and one score. Jackson Johns, meanwhile, completed 5 of 10 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown while Mike Deleon added three carries for 42 yards, Cameron Poulsen two catches for 29 yards and one two-point conversion, Ethan Watson four carries for 25 yards and two touchdowns and Caleb Martin with five carries for 23 yards.
On defense, Colby Caton had nine solo stops and three assisted tackles. Trent Maxwell finished the game with six solo stops, three assisted tackles and one sack while Tyson Ellison had three solo stops and three assisted tackles, Conner Acton with two solo stops and three assisted tackles, Jackson Johns with two solo stops and two assisted tackles and Blake Richardson with three solo stops.
