The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team battled to the very end Tuesday night on the road against the Columbia Hickman Kewpies.
While leading at one point 5-3 after 4 1/2, the Lady Pirates allowed Hickman to rally back with two in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game and then surrendered the game winner in the seventh for a 6-5 loss.
Boonville softball coach Christie Zoeller said these girls came out and played an amazing game against Hickman. “Peyton Kempf did a great job on the mound and we played much better defense behind her,” Zoeller said. “We still had too many errors but we also had some really phenomenal plays tonight. We started this game out on the right foot and were able to put the ball into play and push four runs across early on. I am really proud of these girls and their will to never give up. We are slowly putting it all together and I hope we use this game as a building block to keep pushing us in the right direction.”
The loss dropped Boonville to 1-4 on the season.
As for the pitching by Kempf, the senior hurler also fell to 1-4 on the season by giving up six runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Hurtado picked up the win in the circle for Hickman by limiting Boonville to five runs on seven hits while striking out 10 batters.
The Lady Kewpies also had five errors in the game, which led to the four-run first inning by Boonville. But even then Hickman kept the game close by pushing across three runs in the second to cut the lead to one at 4-3. Meanwhile, after a scoreless third and fourth, Boonville came back with one run to go up 5-3 only to have Hickman plate two in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 5-all. The Lady Kewpies then scored the winning run in the seventh on a one out double and a RBI-single up the middle by Wheeler.
Hickman also out-hit Boonville 10-7, with King going 2-for-4 with a single and a double. Wheeler and Hall also finished the game with two hits while Derboven tripled.
Kempf also led the hitting attack for Boonville, who dropped to 1-4, with a single, double and one RBI. Bryanna Jones had two singles and one RBI while Brooke Eichelberger added a double and two RBIs and Kourtney Kendrick and Logan Root each with one single.
In the JV game, Hickman defeated Boonville 12-4.
Alexis Albin took the loss for Boonville’s JV by giving up eight runs on one hit and 12 walks while striking out two batters in three innings. Rachel Massa then came in and pitched one inning in relief and allowed four runs on three walks while striking out one batter.
As for the hitting in the game for Boonville, who actually out-hit Hickman 5-1, Albin had one double while Olivia Eichelberger and Emma West singled and drove in one run. Daylynn Baker and Kiley Johnson also had one single while Rachel Massa drove in one run.
