The New Franklin boys and girls cross-country team opened the 2018 season over the weekend in the Mexico Cross-Country Tournament.
For the New Franklin boys, Tyler Perkins finished 40th overall in a time of 22 minutes and 7 seconds. Asa Fisher placed 44th overall in 22:31, followed by Sam Ridgeway in 52nd place in 23:09, Hayden Wiseman 74th in 25:11 and Douglass Creason 80th in 26:03.
For the New Franklin girls, who competed in the JV meet, Mallori Burnett finished ninth overall in 28:13 while Logan Pierce placed 44th in 29:54.
New Franklin coach Adam Quest said it’s always hard to know what to expect when heading into the first meet of the year.
“With our first meet being the Mexico Invitational, it was especially difficult,” Quest said. “We are one of the smaller schools in attendance, and it is sometimes tough to gauge where we are at against schools so much larger than us.  I was very excited to get this season under way, because for the first time in our programs history, we actually had enough boys to make a full team.
“It was wonderful to be able to see them compete as a team, and not just as individuals.  There was definitely some issues with the heat, and two of our athletes were running in their first races ever.  In the end, I was very happy with the way that all of our athletes handled the elements and the pressure of the first meet of the year.  I definitely saw some things that make me excited about where this season is headed."
Brock Fisher of Fulton won the boys varsity meet in a time of 19:01.68 while Brooklyn Carvajal of La Plata captured first in the girls JV meet in 25:15.
