New Franklin baseball coach Erich Gerding said the Bulldogs just didn’t have enough firepower Monday night in a 12-5 loss against Westran.
While managing only five hits in seven innings, Gerding said Westran also scored three in the first on five hits.
“We just could not keep up,” Gerding said. “Even though they committed five errors, we could not get a big hit or keep the line moving when we needed to.”
Of course it didn’t help that New Franklin trailed 3-1 after the first and 5-1 after two. But then to make matters worse, Westran also tacked on one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings of play and two again in the sixth to go up 9-0. Meanwhile, in the bottom-half of the sixth, New Franklin finally got on the board with two runs to cut the lead back to seven.
Andy Neal took the loss on the mound for New Franklin by giving up seven runs on 10 hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Neal also struck out four batters. Koy Harris then came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two batters.
As for the hitting in the game for New Franklin, Tysen Dowell went 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs. Gavin Bishop, Avery Lauer and Crayton Gallatin each had one single.
