The Bunceton Lady Dragons softball team fell in the opening round of the Class 1 District 15 Tournament Wednesday night against Smithton by a score of 6-2.
The Lady Dragons, who finished the season at 4-8 overall, trailed Smithton 6-0 after the first-four innings Tuesday night before play was halted. Then, after returning on Wednesday to finish the final-three innings, Bunceton rallied back with two runs in the top-half of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2. Unfortunately for the Lady Dragons, they would get no closer while failing to score in the sixth and seventh innings.
Bunceton coach Brian Emde said interesting game in that it took two days to play. “We left 12 runners on base, which included the bases loaded in the third and fifth inning,” Emde said. “Chloe Moser and Reagan Triebsch both had hard hit balls in those innings with two outs but it was hit right at them.”
Alyssya Cason picked up the win in the circle for Smithton while Taylor Burnett took the loss for Bunceton. Burnett pitched the first-four innings and gave up six runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three. Skyler Shuffield then came in and pitched two innings in relief and allowed one hit while striking out four.
Moser and Cara Bishop each doubled in the game for Bunceton while Burnett, Jenna Kahle and Abby Young each singled.
