Boonville wrestlers Bryce Newham and Peyton Hahn had a successful weekend while competing at the USA Kids State Tournament at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis.
While competing against wrestlers from all across the state, Newham placed fourth overall in the 8U, 80-pound weight class at 3-2, while Hahn finished second in the 14U, 205 pound weight class with a record of 3-1.
In Newham’s first match, the Boonville grappler won by major decision against Galtin Denham of Mexico 12-0. Then, in the quarterfinals, Newham won by fall in the second period against Eric Anderson of Carthage. Meanwhile, in the semifinal round, Newham lost to Mason Bindel of Victory Wrestling by a score of 6-2. Then, after beating Braxton Emerson of Lexington by fall in the consolation semifinals, Newham dropped his second match of the tournament against Drew Jarett of Odessa by a score of 11-4.
Newham is a two-time state qualifier and wrestles for the Boonslick Heartland YMCA Wrestling Club. He is coached by his dad, Kyle, Joey Bishop, the head coach at the YMCA, Louis Stock, James Briggs and Jesse Grant.
Hahn also won his first-round match by fall against Marcus Orellana of Ozark Wrestling. Then, in the quarterfinals, Hahn picked up his second pin of the tournament in the third period against Isaac Enloe of Jeff City. Hahn also won 9-1 over Zach Smith of Lebanon in the semifinals. Meanwhile, in the championship match, Hahn lost by fall in the second period against Elias Washington of Sedalia.
Hahn wrestles for Pirate Power House Wrestling. He is coached by his dad, Justin, and LSE Middle School Wrestling Coach Summer Young. Hahn finished his youth career as a four-time finalists and a one time champion. He will wrestle for Boonville High School next year.
