The Ss. Peter & Paul boys sixth grade basketball team have one blowout and one nailbiter thus far in the annual St. Pius X Tournament in Moberly.
After beating Mary Immaculate 32-10 in the opening round of the tournament on Monday, the Warriors fell in a heartbreaker in the second round on Wednesday against Higbee by a score of 30-29.
In the game against Mary Immaculate, the Warriors opened the first half with a 16-2 lead and then held a 16-8 advantage in the second half for the victory.
Ss. Peter & Paul coach Daren Jeffries said his team had Mary Immaculate out-sized and were able to get a lot of offensive rebounds and putbacks. “Everyone was able to contribute,” Jeffries said. “We were able to jump out early and led 12-0 at the end of the first quarter and from there the bench took on the bulk of the load to coast to a 32-10 win.”
Rhodes Leonard had the game-high for Ss. Peter & Paul with 10 points along with nine rebounds and one assist.
Henry Rohrbach finished the game with six points, six rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot while Luis Green added four points and 12 rebounds, Adam Nave four points, five rebounds and one steal, Ben Lutz two points, 13 rebounds, four steals and one assist, Kennedy Griffy two points, six rebounds and one steal, Ross Brackman two points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, Ryder Comegys two points, one rebound and one steal, Eli Stock two rebounds, one steals, one assist and one blocked shot, Chase Amos three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Levi Jeffries two steals, one assist and one blocked shot and Dalton Johnson four rebounds.
In the game against Higbee, Ss. Peter & Paul trailed for pretty much the entire game until the fourth as the Tigers led 8-2 after one, 14-11 at the half and 22-18 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Warriors rallied back with a 11-8 advantage and held a 29-28 lead only to lose the game by one in the final seconds.
Jeffries said this was a tough loss for the boys. “We got off to a slow start as Higbee scored the first eight points of the game, but we were able to cut the lead to three at halftime,” Jeffries said. “Going into the fourth quarter, we were down four. The defense was able to force some key turnovers down the stretch. After trailing the entire game, Levi hit a jumper with 7 seconds remaining to give us our first lead at 29-28. We were called for a foul as Higbee’s Derek Rochett drove to the basket with 2 seconds remaining. Rochett sank both free throws to earn Higbee the one point win. It was great to see the boys battle back the way they did.”
Rohrbach led the scoring attack for Ss. Peter & Pau(7-7) with 11 points along with seven rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Jeffries finished the game with eight points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist while Leonard chipped in two points, nine rebounds, two steals and one assist, Brackman two points, three steals, one rebound and one assist, Lutz two points, three steals and one rebound, Amos and Comegys each with two points and Green with four rebounds.
