The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team suffered its third loss of the season Saturday on the road by losing to Class 2 and No. 2 ranked Skyline by a score of 63-43.
The Lady Pirates, dropping to 17-3 on the season, trailed at the end of every quarter against Skyline as the Tigers led 15-11 after one, 34-22 at the break and 50-32 after three quarters of play. Skyline also outscored Boonville 13-11 in the final period to win by 20.
“The first thing I told the girls after the game ended was that even though we lost, we got better today,” said Boonville Lady Pirates coach Jaryt Hunziker. “We will not see that type of pressure and shooting the rest of the season. Skyline is one of the best teams in Missouri in any class. Their constant pressure caused us to make poor decisions but for the most part we handled it fairly well. After the first quarter we found ourselves behind four but had missed many high percentage shots that could have easily gave us the lead. Jamie was getting some quality looks inside but halfway through the second quarter she picked up a technical foul which forced her to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.
“Skyline went on the take a 12 point lead into the half after connecting on seven three point field goals. They do a great job of breaking down defenses and finding open shooters for easy looks behind the arc. We have faced many teams that love the outside shot but we have never faced a team that is as consistent at making them as Skyline. Their outside shooting continued throughout the second half as they connected on another five shots from behind the arc with many coming from NBA range. We battled and worked hard at trying to chip away but could never get ourselves back to single digit deficit. We did an outstanding job from the charity stripe, connecting on 16 of 18 shots.”
Cole had 24 and DaMitze 20 to lead all scorers for Skyline, who improved to 19-2 on the season.
For Boonville, Brynn Edwards finished the game with 14 points, nine rebounds, one steal and one assist.
Camryn Monteer chipped in 12 points, one rebound and one assist while Kennedy Renfrow added four points, two rebounds and two steals, Hana Cook four points, one rebound and one assist, Jalyn Schnetzler also with four points, Jamie Lemmons three points and four rebounds, Kate Peterson two points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist and Jodie Bass with one rebound, one steal and one assist.
The Lady Pirates also struggled shooting the ball all game against Skyline while hitting on only 13 of 43 shots from the field for 30 percent. However from the foul line, Boonville hit on 16 of 18 shots for 89 percent.
