The Boonville Pirates freshmen basketball team fell in the third place of the Mexico Tournament on Saturday by losing to Columbia Hickman 54-45.
The Pirates, dropping to 3-4 on the season, trailed Columbia Hickman 14-10 after first period’s end, 27-19 at the half and 37-29 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Kewpies outscored Boonville 17-16.
“Even though the game ended in a loss, I was so happy with the way the boys competed,” said Boonville freshmen coach Paul Moore. “We had to make some adjustments to our lineup and we needed some guys to step into new roles and carry some more responsibilities, and we had those guys step up big time.  Hickman was a very athletic team that could also shoot from outside, so we knew we had to play solid man defense and hold them to as few shots per possession as possible.
“We came out stronger today than we have looked in a while.  We had guys like Cody and Aiden who had to step into a much larger role in the offense and they did a tremendous job with that.  They were strong with the basketball and were able to create looks for themselves and their teammates.  I was also proud that some guys had to play more minutes than what they were used to, but they played those minutes very well and did the job we needed them to do.  In the end, Hickman was able to hit a few deep three-pointers and go on a couple of runs that put the game out of reach, but we kept fighting back until the end.”
Larson had 18 points and Kespohl nine for Hickman.
For Boonville, Cody Garner finished the game with 18 points while Aidan Lemmons added 12, Kayle Rice six, Axton Nease five and Landon Williams and Saylor Marquez each with two.
