Beats Sedalia 40-36, falls to Mustangs 39-27
The Boonville Pirates wrestling team dominated in individual matches but due to forfeits finished 1-1 in a triangular meet Thursday at Eldon.
The Pirate wrestlers defeated Sedalia Smith-Cotton 40-36 but then lost to Eldon by a score of 39-27.
The split put the Pirates at 2-3 overall.
Boonville Pirates wrestling coach Christian Stock said in the match against Smith-Cotton the Pirates wrestled really well.
“The Tigers only won one of the six matches wrestled,” Stock said. “The stand out matches for this dual would be Jayson Bundy winning by fall over Richard Hagan. This is his first varsity recorded win. Greyson Mesik also recorded a win over Austin Lauer with a fall as well. Both of these guys have worked hard in the room this season and it is nice to see them get wins in a dual setting. Overall, the team did exactly what we need to do to win duals. We beat them head to head in the matches we wrestled.”
Of the six matches against Smith-Cotton, the Pirate wrestlers finished 5-1 but also had five forfeits. The Tigers, meanwhile, had two forfeits. Boonville and Smith-Cotton were both open at 106.

In the match against Eldon, Stock said the Pirates started at 120 and won four of the seven matches wrestled but lost two heartbreakers at the end of the dual.
“The team did exactly what I wanted them to do in the head to head matches by winning more than the other team,” Stock said. “I also feel like we could have won the dual if we would have won at 220 and heavyweight. That is not the way it turned out. To focus on the positives in this match, Jayson Bundy recorded his second varsity win by pinning Jake Churchman. Also, Charlie Pumel and Brant Whitaker both won by fall. We wrestled well in this dual, I just wish we could have pulled the last two matches and got the win against a future conference opponent.”
