Boonville Pirates Cross-Country Coach Blake Bodenhamer knew going into Saturday meet at Marshall that his team was going to be short-handed.
While competing in their final conference meet of the season on Saturday, Bodenhamer had only three runners compete on the boys team due to injuries. As for the girls team, Bodenhamer said they were either at choir or band competitions.
Skyler Blumhorst finished 28th overall out of 38 runners in a time of 20 minutes and 51 seconds while Charlie Pumel placed 30th in 21:18 and Ethan Gunderson 38th in 23:59.
Alex Dukes of Mexico had the fastest time in the race in 16:07.
“All of our guys had a really quick start during the race,” Bodenhamer said. “Skyler and Charlie hit the 1 mile mark by six minutes and Ethan followed pretty quick after around 6:30. Skyler and Charlie were pretty much neck and neck until around the second mile. Both of them were at 12:30 by the second mile and Ethan had slowed down considerably hitting it around 14. After the second mile Skyler started to pull away from Charlie for the rest of the race. All of the guys were pretty gassed by the time they hit the finish from their first and second mile paces.”
Bodenhamer said he wishes Skyler and Charlie could have been at practice the last couple weeks, where they worked on mile repeats because it would've really helped the last part of their race.
“Ethan looked stronger than the first time he saw the course a few weeks ago, cutting off about 30 seconds,” Bodenhamer said.
Fulton captured the team title with 28 points while Mexico finished second with 34, Marshall third with 83, Kirksville fourth with 96 and Moberly fifth with 111.
As for the girls, Isabella Ross of Moberly turned in the fastest time in 20 minutes and 27 seconds.
In the final-team standings, Hannibal captured first with 37 points. Mexico finished second with 49 points, followed by Moberly with 60, Kirksville with 98 and Fulton with 122.
After Tuesday’s meet at Mexico, the Boonville boys and girls cross-country team will gear up for districts in Moberly on the Saturday, October 28th.
Teams competing in the meet along with Boonville are: Blair Oaks, Chillicothe, Eldon, Fulton, Helias, Kirksville, Marshall, Mexico, MMA, Moberly, Osage and Southern Boone.
Only the top 15 finishers will move on to the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 4th at Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City.
