The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team knew this could be their final chance to beat the Hannibal Lady Pirates Thursday night in NCMC action at Hannibal.
With the Lady Pirates moving to the Tri-County Conference in 2018, a win over Hannibal could end 10 years of disappointing losses to their longtime nemesis.
Unfortunately for Boonville, they never got off the bus while losing in two straight against Hannibal 11-25 and 10-25.
The loss also closed out the regular season for Boonville at 12-11-2 overall and 6-4 in the NCMC.
Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball coach Morgan Sprigg said last night’s match was not what she expected or anticipated to happen.
“We came out flat and continued to play flat throughout the whole match,” Sprigg said. “Their heads were not in the game at all last night. They didn’t play together as a team and had trouble getting ourselves up. Our stats across the board were not good. We had four kills total as a team, which is the worst I have seen this year from this team. Our defense didn’t play bad, but we could not score offensively which was a problem. Both Brynn Edwards and MJ Goff worked their butts off on defense, but we couldn’t do much after that. We had six net calls in the first set, which is not like us, and we made a lot of other little mistakes as well. Be beat ourselves.
“I was disappointed in the girls for not playing up to their potential. They know as well as I do that they are better than they played last night. We knew that Hannibal was a good team and we had trouble last time scoring on them, but I know we could have played with them better than we did. I hate that we didn’t give them a good game considering this was our last time playing them. We have a lot to work on to prepare for districts next week. We need to work on our offense today and placing the ball to the open area. We have Mexico for the first round of districts on Tuesday.”
MJ Goff led the Lady Pirates with 14 digs along with two attacks.
Brynn Edwards finished the match with 12 digs along with one kill on 23 attack attempts. Shayann Potter had four assists, three digs and three attack attempts while Dana Lester added four service points with one ace, one dig and one kill on 13 attack attempts, Jodie Bass with five digs, Kelsey Bishop with one service point with one ace, one dig and one kill on 10 attack attempts, Lawren Luscombe with two service points with one ace and 10 attack attempts and Brianna Walker with one dig and one attack attempt.
In the JV match, Hannibal defeated Boonville in two straight sets by the scores of 24-26 and 12-25.
Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell said the girls fought hard the first set. “We had some moments where we made silly mistakes, but I was really proud of them for not giving up the entire set,” Wendell said. “We came back from a 23-17 deficit to take the game to extra points. The second game was rough. We didn’t look like the same team at all. Taylor Frederick played an excellent game. She didn’t let the balls drop and made some awesome hustle plays.”
Freshman Taylor Frederick led the Lady Pirates with eight assists along with five digs and three attack attempts.
Makiya West finished the match with seven digs along with two kills on nine attack attempts, one ace and one block. Lily Terrell had four digs, four kills on 23 attack attempts, two blocks and one assist while Sophie Waibel added five digs and four kills on 14 attack attempts, Kennedy Renfrow with six digs, one assist and one kill on eight attack attempts, Carson Dee with seven digs and two attack attempts, Eliza Adams with two digs and one attack attempt and Diamond Lewis with one dig and two attack attempts.
