One day removed from knocking off the No. 4 team in the state in Class 1, the Pilot Grove Tigers baseball team picked up its eighth win of the season in 13 games by beating the Fayette Falcons Tuesday in Fayette 11-7.
The Tigers, 8-5 on the season, will now direct their attention to the Class 1 District 11 Tournament, which begins with one game on Thursday and two on Friday. Pilot Grove, the No. 1 seed, will play the winner of Prairie Home-Higbee on Monday, May 15th in Pilot Grove starting at 5 p.m.
As for the game against Fayette, head coach Dillon Yung said his team picked up where they left off the last couple of games and really swung the bat well, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits.
“I also thought we were very good defensive,” Yung said. “Our defense got us out of a lot of situations, including getting a triple play with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Overall, we finish the regular season at 8-5 and are really starting to play our best baseball at the right time of the year with districts starting at the end of the week.”
While out-hitting Fayette 10-8 in the game, the Tigers also led from the first inning on while pushing across one run in each of the first and third innings. Meanwhile, after Fayette rallied back with one in its half of the fourth, Pilot Grove came back and exploded for five runs in the fifth to make it 7-1.
The Falcons kept the game close, though. With two more runs in the bottom-half of the fifth, Fayette cut the lead to four at 7-3.
Fayette would get no closer as Pilot Grove tacked on four more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-3 only to have the Falcons put up four in the seventh to end the scoring.
Austin Hammond picked up the win on the mound for Pilot Grove while Robbie Robinson took the loss for Fayette. Hammond pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits and six walks while striking out one. Austin Kollmeyer then came in and pitched 1/3 inning in relief and allowed no hits, no runs and no walks.
For Fayette, Robinson pitched the first-three innings and issued two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters.
