The Boonville Pirates C-baseball team dug a hole it couldn’t get out of while falling at home Tuesday against the Mexico Bulldogs by a score of 12-5.
The Pirates, dropping to 3-5 on the season, trailed Mexico 8-0 after the first-two innings before rallying back with a 5-4 advantage over the final-five innings.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 3-5 on the season, head coach Paul Moore said he didn't feel like they were mentally at their best as a team against Mexico.
“We were playing a good team that had some older players with more experience, so it seemed like an opportunity to test ourselves and see where we were at the midway point of the season,” Moore said.  “However, it felt like we let that get in our heads a bit.  Mexico was able to get a couple of runs on us early, and we couldn't recover from it.  Defensively, we made way too many errors and allowed too many baserunners, which never gave our pitchers a chance to settle in and get into a rhythm.
“We went back to giving away free outs, and Mexico was able to capitalize on it by hitting the ball too all parts of the field.  It seems like the majority of the tough situations we face in any game are the situations that we put ourselves in.  Between the eight walks and five errors, we just dug ourselves too deep into a hole.  I'm hoping that we can learn mental toughness and handling adversity from a game like tonight, a lesson that is very important to grasp at this level.”
Zach Quinlan picked up the win on the mound for Mexico while Peyton Keeran took the loss for Boonville. Quinlan pitched 1 2/3 innings and walked two while striking out two batters.
For Boonville, Keeran pitched just 1 1/3 innings and surrendered eight runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three.
Four other pitchers followed Keeran, with Nathan Platt pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two. Josh Polk then came in and pitched one inning and allowed three runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters. Meanwhile, after Cale Fox pitched two innings and walked one batter while striking out four, Ethan Walker came in and pitched one inning and yielded one run on one hit and two walks while striking out three batters.
Mexico also out-hit Boonville 8-5, with Tyler Talley going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
For Boonville, Dylan Barnthouse went 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI while Cale Fox, Avery Lauer and Ethan Walker added one single each. Russell Potter also drove in one run.
