Improve to 21-2 on the season
It could have easily been called the BATTLE OF STATE-RANKED TEAMS Thursday night as the No. 2 ranked Chillicothe Lady Hornets hosted the No. 3 ranked Boonville Lady Pirates in a winner take all.
Although the two teams play in different classes-Boonville in Class 3 and Chillicothe in Class 4-the game brought back memories of 2015 when the Lady Pirates knocked off the Hornets in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament to reach the Final Four.
As it turned out, the Lady Pirates played the spoiler role again by beating Chillicothe in two overtimes by a score of 55-50.
While the win improved Boonville’s record to 21-2 overall, Chillicothe fell for only the second time this season with the same identical record.
Boonville Lady Pirates basketball coach Jaryt Hunziker said this was a great win for the program.
“This is the same group of 10 seniors from Chillicothe that we beat two years ago in the quarterfinals when they were all sophomores,” Hunziker said. “To beat the Class 4 No. 2 team in the state on their court says a lot about how far this group has come this year. The girls kept fighting every possession tonight and wasn’t going to give in towards end of regulation and throughout the two overtimes. Brynn Edwards had a huge game tonight for us scoring 20 points, including two key free throws to seal the victory. Our zone made Chillicothe really work for shots and took away their inside game. We did a great job of location their shooters which they have many. I told the girls to celebrate the win tonight but after this weekend everyone has the same record of 0-0 heading into districts.”
As expected when two state-ranked teams battle it out, the Chillicothe Lady Hornets came out firing away early on while holding a 15-12 advantage. However in the second quarter, Boonville flipped the scoring by outscoring Chillicothe 15-11 to lead by one (27-26) at the break.
The Lady Pirates also held a 9-8 advantage in the third to extend the lead to 36-34. But even that was short-lived as Chillicothe stormed back in the final period with a 9-7 scoring edge to tie the game at 43-all. Then, after both teams put up five points in the first overtime, Boonville came back and outscored the Lady Hornets 7-2 in the second OT for the victory.
Sophomore guard Brynn Edwards also had a big night for the Lady Pirates by finishing the game with 20 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Jamie Lemmons chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist while Hannah Fuemmeler added 10 points, nine rebounds and one steal, Camryn Monteer with five points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist, Kate Peterson with five points, one rebound and one assist and Brooke Coleman with two points and one assist.
The Lady Pirates also finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field and 57 percent from the foul line.
For Chillicothe, Whitney Clampitt had 2 points, Hannah Jones eight and Kaitlyn Parkey with seven.
As for the Boonville girls junior varsity basketball team, they closed out the regular season with a loss against Chillicothe 42-28.
Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell said the goal in the game was to finish the season on a high note.
“I believe we did just that,” Wendell said. “We had a slow start, allowing 18 points in the first quarter,” Wendell said. “We didn’t quit and came out to outscore them in the second and third quarters. We picked up the intensity on defense and settled in on offense to finish open opportunities. Unfortunately, a run at the beginning of the fourth quarter put Chillicothe too far out of our reach.
“I told the girls after the game that I am not upset by that loss because they fought. They never quit. That was the tone of most of our season. Coming off a tough JV season last year, we weren’t sure what this year was going to bring. They came out to every practice and every game wanting to get better and they did just that. Like I said on Tuesday, I am really proud of their efforts this season. They have put themselves in a good position to build on for next year.”
Liberty Cox had nine points to lead all scorers for Chillicothe while Catey Trout chipped in eight and Hunter Keithley and Kennedie Kiefer each with seven.
For Boonville, Lawren Luscombe tossed in nine points. Zoe Coffelt added eight, Jalyn Schnetzler seven and Madison Lenz and Hailey Polk each with two.
