Gavin Shepherd scored a team-high 11 points, leading the Pilot Grove boys junior varsity basketball team past Harrisburg 59-40 Wednesday night in Harrisburg.
The Tigers, 1-0 on the season, led Harrisburg 31-17 at the half and then outscored the Bulldogs 28-23 in the second half to garner the victory.
Pilot Grove coach Derek Skaggs said he thought the younger kids did an excellent job. “We controlled things defensively and as a result it gave us many transition opportunities along with three half-court execution,” Skaggs said. “All across the board we came out with a focus from the starters to the bench. Each time a new guy stepped onto the court he picked up his teammate and we didn’t miss a beat all night.”
Cole Meisenheimer finished the game with nine points for the Tigers while Lucas Fahrendorf added eight, Anderson Twenter six, Kealin Vinson five, Ethan Williams two and Dorsan Hern with one.

The Pilot Grove girls junior varsity basketball team fell on the road Wednesday night against the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs.
Pilot Grove, dropping to 0-1 on the season, trailed Harrisburg 34-11 at the half and 45-19 after three quarters of play before rallying back with a 11-6 scoring edge in the final period.
Pilot Grove coach Landon Daniel said this wasn’t their best showing by any means but they  did get better as the game went on.
“We wanted to work on very specific things in this game and the girls just came out really flat and our desire just wasn’t there,” Daniel said. “They got challenged a little bit during halftime and we made some adjustments and it they responded so that was a definite positive note for the night. We just need to get stronger and keep on increasing out basketball IQ and if we can do that we will be okay and good things will happen to this group of girls.”
Alivia Spry had 16 points and Emma Barton 14 for Harrisburg.
For Pilot Grove, Karsyn Kraus tossed in 10 while Aryn Lorenz added nine, Natalie Rentel four, Reagan McFatrich three and Chloe Schlotzhauer and Abby Schupp each with two points.
