New Franklin baseball team falls on the road against Sturgeon 10-0

New Franklin senior Cassie Armentrout will be the first to tell you that her nine straight wins in the circle is attributed to her teammates on the field.
While the Lady Bulldogs improved to 9-1 on the season and 5-0 in the CAC, it’s safe to say that Armentrout has had a big hand during the streak. Such was the case Thursday night on the road against Sturgeon as the senior hurler picked up the complete-game victory with four strikeouts and walking only two batters. But even Armentrout will be the first to admit that it wasn’t her best game while also surrendering five runs on 12 hits.
New Franklin coach Ross Dowell said the girls got off to a great start. “I’m very happy with our first-four innings, however, we got content with our lead,’ Dowell said. “Sturgeon made a nice run at us, and we were lucky to hold them off on their field. We need to work on finishing games, and competing until the final out.”
New Franklin never trailed in the game against Sturgeon and led 2-0 after one, 8-0 after two and 9-0 after four. However, in the bottom-half of the fifth, Sturgeon rallied back with four runs to cut the lead back to five. The Lady Bulldogs would get no closer as New Franklin answered with four runs in the top-half of the sixth to extend the lead to 13-4. Then, in the bottom-half of the sixth, Glasgow put up another run to end the scoring.
New Franklin also had 19 hits in the game against Sturgeon, with Madison Matney finishing with a perfect 4-for-4 with four singles and three RBIs.
Jasmine Himmelberg was 3-for-4 with two singles, one triple and one RBI while Shelby Breshears added three singles and two RBIs, Grace Hundley with three singles and one RBI, Kacie White with two singles and one RBI, Madison Maupin with two singles, Armentrout with one triple and two RBIs and Lauren Evans with one single and one RBI.
Cranmer had three hits in the game for Sturgeon. Wilson took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs.

Sturgeon led New Franklin from start to finish for a 10-0 win in CAC action Thursday night in Sturgeon.
New Franklin, dropping to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the CAC, managed just three hits in five innings against the Bulldogs.
New Franklin coach Erich Gerding said the Bulldogs also had 11 walks, five errors and gave up seven unanswered runs in the fifth. “We have to have better efforts on the bump,” Gerding said. “I’m very proud of freshman Carter Bailey coming in and getting us out of a no-out bases-loaded jam in the fourth.”
Sturgeon led just 3-0 after four innings before exploding for seven runs in the fifth to win by the mercy rule.
Jesse Roberts picked up the win on the mound for Sturgeon while Kale Harris took the loss for New Franklin. Harris pitched two-plus innings and gave up two runs on one hit and six walks while striking out three. Mason Bailey then came in and pitched one-plus innings and allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one. Then, to finish the game, Carter Bailey pitched 1 2/3 innings and surrendered seven runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
Austin Jones had the only extra base hit in the game for New Franklin, being a double. Dustin Mehrhoff and Caleb Phillips each had one single.
