Boonville Pirates soccer coach Tim Brown said it best when referring to Thursday’s match against Southern Boone.
While battling the Eagles for over 70 minutes to a 0-0 tie, Southern Boone finally scored what turned out to be the winning goal at the 75 minute mark for a 1-0 victory.
“You cannot win if you do not score, and we did everything we needed to do to win except finish,” Brown said.
The Pirates, who dropped to 1-1 on the season, also finished the match with 14 shot attempts and eight shots on goal compared to just 12 shot attempts for Southern Boone and six shots on goal.
Nonetheless after playing to a 0-0 tie at the half against Southern Boone, the Pirates had just one minor slip up in the second half while allowing the Eagles to score the game’s only goal at the 75 minute mark for the win.
Boonville senior goalie Riley Lang also had a busy night with seven saves in the match.
Southern Boone also won the JV match against Boonville, 3-1.
Brown said the JV Pirates are still trying to find their rhythm.
The Eagles also led in this match while scoring first at the 12 minute mark to go up 1-0. Then, after a goal by freshman Aaron Witting and an assist by Alejandro Vivas at the 13-minute mark to tie the match at 1-all, Boonville would give up two more goals at the 19 and 38 minute mark to suffer the loss.
Southern Boone finished the match with 10 shot attempts and five shots on goal while Boonville had seven shot attempts and three shots on goal.
Sophomore goalie Lane Marshall, meanwhile, had two saves in the match for Boonville.
The Boonville Pirates soccer team will host the Fulton Hornets in a varsity match only on Tuesday, August 30th at the BHS Sports Complex starting at 5 p.m.
