On a night to honor the graduating seniors, the Pilot Grove Tigers baseball team did one better by beating the Westran Hornets Friday night in Pilot Grove by a score of 4-3.
Although the Hornets out-hit Pilot Grove 8-6, the Tigers scored the one run that mattered the most by breaking a 3-3 tie after three with one run in the bottom-half of the fourth for the victory.
While the win improved Pilot Grove’s record to 12-6 overall, co-coach Landon Daniel said this was just an all-around great game to watch and be a part of.
“Brady Rentel threw one of his best games of the year and our defense played well behind him,” Daniel said. “Both teams never quit and it seemed like whenever we made a good play or got a timely hit, Westran would respond back. We ended the game on a heads up play from Isaac Lorenz and Austin Kollmeyer with an infield fly being called and Isaac not making the catch and then throwing down the third base line to tag the runner advancing to third. All in all, it was one of our better games of the year and for it to be Senior Night for our guys made it all that much better.”
Brady Rentel picked up the win on the mound for Pilot Grove while Jon Gerke recorded the save. In 6 1/3 innings, Rentel struck out seven batters and gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks. Gerke then came in and pitched 2/3 inning in relief and allowed one hit.
Austin Sears, meanwhile, took the loss for Westran and gave up four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four.
As for the hitting in the game for Pilot Grove, Austin Kollmeyer went 2-for-2 with two singles and two RBIs. Steven Bell doubled while Jacob Twenter added a single and one RBI and Isaac Lorenz and Brady Rentel each with one single.
