After leading the team with 38 goals in 2015, Boonville senior Cali Jo McAreavy inched ever so close to another 30 goal season Saturday in a make-up game against the Fulton Lady Hornets.
With five goals against the Lady Hornets, McAreavy upped her season total to 25 with one game left in the regular season and possibly two in the district tournament.
Although McAreavy’s five goal game was no doubt the highlight, the Lady Pirates also posted their 10th shutout of the season by beating Fulton 9-0 to improve to 14-4 overall and 10-1 in the NCMC.
Boonville will closeout the regular season on the road Tuesday against Kirksville starting at 5 p.m.
“Again, we looked hungry from the whistle, earning a penalty kick in the first minute,” said Boonville Lady Pirates soccer coach Tim Brown. “However, after junior back Rosie Lenz calmly put it away, we quickly and uncharacteristically tapered off, and the next 20 minutes were a bit shaky-we were reckless kicking the ball all over the place (very much like our second Hannibal match). Once we settled down, though, we looked really dangerous on attack: between the 20th minute and the 57th minute, we scored 8 goals-five of which were from senior Cali Jo McAreavy (who now has 10 goals in her last three matches).”
Of course it all started with a penalty kick by junior Rosie Lenz at the 2-minute mark to put Boonville up 1-0. The goal was Lenz’s sixth of the season.
McAreavy then scored the Lady Pirates next-three goals-the first coming at the 20-minute mark on an unassisted kick. The senior standout then followed it up with two more goals only one minute apart at the 24 and 25 minute mark on assists by Hannah Fuemmeler (assist No. 12 and 13) to extend the lead to 4-0. Then, after a goal by Fuemmeler (18th of the season) on an assist by Brynn Edwards at the 31-minute mark to make it 5-0, McAreavy came back with her fourth goal two minutes later at the 33-minute mark on an assist from Brooke Coleman (her fourth) to extend the lead to 6-0 at the half.
The Lady Pirates would score three more goal in the second half at the 50, 55 and 57 mark to push the lead to 9-0. At the 50-minute mark, Edwards scored her 10th goal of the season on the assist by Kate Peterson (her 11th). Then, at the 55-minute mark, Edwards picked up her 11th assists of the season on the goal by McAreavy to make it 8-0. Two minutes later at the 57-minute mark, Edwards picked up her 11th goal of the season on the assist by Blake Allison   to extend the lead to 9-0.
Boonville also finished the match with 41 shot attempts and 27 shots on goal while Fulton had four shot attempts and four shots on goal.
Senior goalie Haylee Thomas also had four saves in the game to extend her total to 56 for the season.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Fulton by a score of 6-1 to improve to 14-1 on the season.
Brown said on April 19th, the match against Fulton was cut short due to lightning, but the JV Lady Pirates were creating goals when they had the chance.
Boonville led Fulton 5-0 at the half with goals at the 4, 19, 21, 28 and 24-minute mark. Maddie Weber scored the first goal on the assist by Jaden McKee. Then, after a goal by Bailey Brimer on the assist by MJ Goff, the Lady Pirates came back with their third of the match on the goal by Goff and the assist by Mille Dorman. Sariana Barbarotta then picked up the fourth goal in the match on the assist by Weber to make it 4-0. Then, to closeout the scoring in the first half, Goff notched goal No. 2 on the assist by Weber to extend the lead to 5-0.
Boonville picked up another goal at the 45-minute mark on the assist from Olivia Browning to Bailey Magyar. Then, at the 47-minute mark to end the scoring, Fulton hit the back of the net for its only goal to make it 6-1.
Boonville’s JV also had 19 shot attempts and 16 shots on goal in the match while Fulton had six shot attempts and three shots on goal.
Sophomore goalie Brookelynn Chadwick, meanwhile, finished the match with two saves.
