The second-half woes continued for the Boonville Lady Pirates soccer team Thursday night at home against the Oak Grove Lady Panthers.
While entering the match with only five goals in the second half in five games, the Lady Pirates can now add only five goals in six games after failing to score in the final 40 minutes in a 2-1 loss against Oak Grove.
Boonville Lady Pirates soccer coach Tim Brown said after the game that the second half woes continue. “Simply put: you cannot defeat decent teams if you do not score goals in the second half,” Brown said. “We severely underestimated an Oak Grove team that we handily defeated 10-0 a year ago and we couldn’t finish to save our lives.”
With two losses now on the season, Boonville has now dropped both games this season by the identical score of 2-1. However after finishing 21-1 last year, the Lady Pirates have also doubled their loss total from 2015 at 4-2.
Of course it wasn’t all bad. In a defensive battle in the first half, Boonville scored the only goal on an assist from Sophie Taube to Hannah Fuemmeler at the 8-minute mark to make it 1-0.
The goal by Fuemmeler was her sixth of the season.
Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, they had nothing to show for their efforts for the remaining 32 minutes of the first half or the final 40 minutes in the second half. As for Oak Grove, they seemed to get better as the game wore on by scoring two goals with seven minutes of each other at the 45 and 52 minute mark to lead Boonville 2-1.
The Lady Pirates never got any closer in the game but did have several rallies only to be turned back by Oak Grove.
Despite the loss, Boonville finished the match with 19 shot attempts and 12 shots on goal while Oak Grove had only 11 shot attempts and eight shots on goal.
Senior Haylee Thomas also had her busiest game to date by finishing the match with six saves.
As for the JV match, Boonville beat Oak Grove by a score of 2-0 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Brown said the JV Lady Pirates recorded their fourth consecutive shutout. “Now they just need to figure out how to spread the goals around,” Brown said.
After playing to a 0-0 tie in the first half, Boonville’s JV scored both of its goals in the second half to garner the victory. Freshman Sariana Barbarotta scored both goals for the Lady Pirates, the first unassisted at the 27-minute mark. The second goal, meanwhile, came at the 38-minute mark on an assist from Maddie Weber.
Boonville finished the match with five shot attempts and five shots on goal while Oak Grove was shutout in both categories.
