The Ss. Peter & Paul girls sixth grade basketball team outscored Marshall 14-2 in the opening quarter and never looked back for a 33-4 victory Thursday night in the New Franklin 5th-6th Grade Tournament.
The Lady Warriors, improving to 14-1 on the season, led Marshall 22-2 at the half and then outscored the Owls 11-2 in the final-two periods.
Ss. Peter & Paul coach Ken Brownfield said this game was really about the defense.
“The girls were very determined on the defensive end,” Brownfield said. “We constantly stopped dribble penetration, challenged shots, caused turnovers, and rebounded very well. For our age, this team really understands what it takes to play good defense. So far we have only given up nine points in the two games combined in this tournament. That really shows the effort these seven players are willing to put out for an entire game. Offensively we did a good job running the court and scored a lot of transition baskets in the first quarter. From that point on we controlled the tempo of the game and were able to get the win and move on to the championship game.”
Addison Brownfield had the game-high for Ss. Peter & Paul with 20 points along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Emma West finished the game with eight points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two assists while Lillian Rohrback added three points, two steals, one rebound and one assist, Hailey James with five rebounds, Olivia Eichelberger with two rebounds and one steal, Alyssa Fitzgerald with two rebounds and Arji Webster with one rebound.
