Area students in kindergarten through fifth grade will have an opportunity to pick up school supplies 1-3 p.m. Aug. 16 at Lions Park as part of the Boonville Kiwanis Club’s annual Back-to-School Bash.
The free school supplies are courtesy the Boonville Kiwanis Club, city of Boonville Local Agency Funding and other clubs and businesses.
Supplies will be prepackaged, ready for pick-up. Tents will be set up in the park to allow for social distancing. Supply packages are based on the Boonville R-1 School District supply lists.
Masks are not required but encouraged.
Boonville Kiwanis gave away more than 475 packages in 2019 and hopes to surpass that number this year, club President Laura Wax said.
"There is no financial requirement for this event. We want all children to have a good start to the school year," she said.
Along with the supply distribution, Morgan Street Baptist Church will be providing free food and drinks. Shear Madness will provide free haircuts.
"Our purpose for the event is to bring everyone in Boonville together regardless of income, race or orientation to celebrate our children and their return to school," Wax said.
Those wishing to support the back-to-school bash can do so at the annual Pack the Bus event 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Boonville Walmart. Volunteers will be on hand to collect supplies purchased at Walmart to pack a school bus. Cash donations also are accepted through GoFundMe, or by mail to Boonville Kiwanis Club, c/o Sam Giroux, 1920 Legends West Ave., Boonville, MO 65233.
