A senior at the University of Missouri is in the Boone County Jail on first-degree rape and sodomy charges after being arrested Thursday by the Columbia Police Department.

Giovanni R. Hawver, 21, is being held on $100,000 cash-only bond. He waived formal arraignment on the charges and his next court hearing is set for Thursday, when Associate Circuit Judge Kimberly Shaw will review his bond amount.

Hawver is accused of carrying a woman who was intoxicated into his apartment building about 1 a.m. Jan. 31, taking her clothes off and engaging in oral sex and intercourse, detective Renee Wilbarger of the Columbia Police Department wrote in a probable cause statement.

Wilbarger wrote that she matched the identity of the man seen on video surveillance with a woman over his shoulder with Hawver's driver's license and social media photos. The charges are based on the woman being too intoxicated to give consent for sex.
