The Centralia Public Library will use a $6,524 Summer Library Program Grant to offer a summer reading program, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said in release announcing the award.

The reading program will be offered to all ages in an effort to improve reading skills. The grant will also be used to provide services at senior centers and senior housing to help people underserved by libraries.

“Libraries play a vital role in providing learning opportunities to people of all ages,” Ashcroft was quoted in the news release. “These grants help Missouri’s libraries provide educational programs during a time when many patrons, particularly younger ones, have a less structured environment.”

The grant was funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, according to the release. Funding is distributed through Ashcroft’s office and the Missouri State Library and totaled $521,266 in fiscal 2020.
