A man was killed and a woman severely wounded early Sunday in a shooting near Vibez, a restaurant and nightclub in downtown Columbia, and a man has been arrested in the case, the Columbia Police Department stated in a news release.

Tershawn E. Kitchen, 34, of Columbia was killed, the release stated. The woman, who was not identified, is being treated at University of Missouri Hospital’s trauma center.

The shooting took place about 2:35 a.m. near 19 N. Fifth St., the release stated.

The department arrested Curtis Allen Lewis, 36, of Columbia, Sunday on charges of voluntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. He is being held in Boone County Jail on $500,000 bond, cash-only, for the assault charge.

The Violent Crime Task Force, created in response to increased gun violence in Missouri, is reviewing the case.

Kitchen's death is the first gun-related death in Columbia this year. Columbia saw 14 gun-related deaths in 2019, which includes two people who took their own lives in two separate murder suicides, according to Tribune reporting on the cases. For the year, two homicides were reported in unincorporated portions of Boone County patrolled by the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

The department is asking anyone information about the shooting to contact the department at 573-874-7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-8477 to remain anonymous.
